How to Install a CS2 Config (CFG)

Find the correct CS2 cfg folder, install a downloaded config, run it with the console and fix common exec errors.

What a CS2 config file does

A CS2 config is a plain-text file ending in .cfg. It can apply supported console commands together, which is useful for crosshair, sensitivity, viewmodel, HUD and radar values.

A CFG file cannot reproduce external hardware or driver choices such as mouse DPI, polling rate, monitor controls, NVIDIA settings or physical equipment. Apply those separately.

Download and inspect the config first

Download the player config and open it in a text editor before running it. A trustworthy file should contain readable commands and comments rather than an executable program.

BestCrosshair-generated configs use a restricted list of supported profile commands and deliberately exclude keybinds and executable chains. Keep a backup of any existing config you plan to replace.

Find the correct CS2 cfg folder

The most reliable method is through Steam: open your Library, right-click Counter-Strike 2, choose Manage and Browse local files. Open the game folder, then csgo, then cfg.

A default Windows installation commonly uses the path below. A custom Steam Library uses the same game\csgo\cfg ending inside the library you selected.

Common Windows path
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\csgo\cfg

Install the CS2 config

Move or copy the downloaded .cfg file into the cfg folder. Keep a simple filename made from letters, numbers, hyphens or underscores, such as ropz-profile.cfg.

  1. Confirm the file extension

In Windows File Explorer, enable File name extensions and make sure the file ends in .cfg rather than .cfg.txt.

  2. Place it in game\csgo\cfg

Use Steam's Browse local files option if you are unsure which Steam Library contains CS2.

  3. Keep the original filename

The name you type after exec must match the file. You can omit the .cfg extension in the console.

Enable the console and run the config

In CS2, open Settings, Game and set Enable Developer Console (~) to Yes. Open the console with the key below Escape, or assign Toggle Console to another key such as F10 in Keyboard/Mouse settings.

Enter exec followed by the config filename and press Enter. For ropz-profile.cfg, use the command below.

Execute the downloaded config
exec ropz-profile

Check that the config loaded

Look for a console error immediately after running exec. If no error appears, enter a known command such as sensitivity or viewmodel_fov without a new value; the console should report the current setting.

You can also compare the visible crosshair, viewmodel and radar against the values on the player profile. Remember that DPI, video resolution and driver settings must still be applied outside the CFG file.

Fix couldn't exec and other CFG errors

If CS2 reports that it could not execute the file, confirm the folder, filename and extension. The most common causes are placing the file in the older csgo folder, using the wrong Steam Library or accidentally saving it as .cfg.txt.

If individual commands are unknown, the file may contain outdated CS:GO commands or settings that CS2 does not support. Remove unsupported lines instead of repeatedly downloading unrelated configs.

Use an autoexec only when you need it

A separate player config is ideal for testing because it runs only when you enter its exec command. If you later want selected commands to load every time, copy only the values you understand into your own autoexec.cfg.

Back up an existing autoexec before editing it. Keeping your personal binds and communication settings separate from a downloaded player profile makes changes easier to reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put a CS2 config?

Open CS2's local files through Steam and place the .cfg file in Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\csgo\cfg.

How do I run a CFG file in CS2?

Enable the developer console, open it and enter exec followed by the filename without the .cfg extension, for example exec ropz-profile.

Why does CS2 say couldn't exec my config?

The file is usually in the wrong folder, has a different filename or was saved as .cfg.txt. Verify all three before changing commands.

Does a player config include DPI and NVIDIA settings?

No. DPI, polling rate, monitor settings, video resolution and graphics-driver settings must be applied outside a normal CS2 CFG file.
